Bertha Lee Easley Sweeney, the youngest child born to Johnnie and Henrietta Amos Easley, was born on September 1, 1929, in Austin, Texas.

She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Lone Star Baptist Church, Webberville, Texas. She attended schools in Fuchs (pronounced Foxes) Grove, adjacent to Manor, Texas.

She married Lorenzo Sweeney on October 19, 1949, and to this union, seven children were born. After marriage, she was a faithful member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and Peaceful St. James Baptist Church, where she served as deaconess, Usher, Nurse’s Aide and a member of the church choir. She later joined St. James Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. E. M. Franklin where she absolutely loved singing and served faithfully until her health deteriorated.

Bertha had a passion for singing and listening to gospel music. Her favorites were James Cleveland, Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, the Mighty Clouds of Joy, Willie Neal Johnson, and the late Rev. Carl Neal. She was a dedicated mother who loved her children and grandchildren, and she absolutely adored her sister Sallie with whom she would spend hours talking to each day.

She peacefully departed this life on November 7, 2011 at the age of 82. She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Lorenzo Sweeney, Jr., daughter, Janice Sweeney, brothers, Gilbert Easley and Doise Easley, sister-in-law, Bird Esther Easley, grandson, Kenneth "Baby Ken" Sweeney, and great-granddaughter, Nieyva Malaine Nichols.

She leaves to cherish her memory, sister Sallie and her husband, Rev. J.D. Cleveland, Sister-in-Law, Johnnie May Easley; children: Luther Sweeney (Eleanor), Rev.
