Marvan was the fifth child born to Moses (Sane) Arnold and Edna Walker Arnold in Austin, Texas.

His parents, two brothers, Moses and Theodore and three sisters, Laura Riley, Rhoda Johnson and Eleanor Arnold preceded him in death.

He attended Blackshear Elementary School and the Old L. C. Anderson High School.

He retired from the Austin American Statesman in 2009, after 36 years of employment. He was a longtime employee of Hudspeth Enterprises and Grace Covenant Church.

Marvan was a workaholic and a quiet comedian. He always said, "I'ze the Mizza, I'ze the Mizza Me, I am the Mizza".

His wife Teresa Strange, guardian daughter Mia and daughter Stephanie Strange along with other children survive Marvan.

Marvan's oldest son Carl Jarmon was adopted at age fourteen by he and his then wife Barbara, and there was one son and three daughters born to Marvan and Barbara; Sheryl (Shea) Love who preceded him in death, Debra Mack (Roy), Marvan, Jr., and Yu Vonda Galloway (James), and sons Ronald Lee (Diane), and John King (Cynthia), and son-in-law, Robert Love.

There were three sons born to Marvan and his second wife Peggy. Christopher and Cleveland preceded him in death along with their elder sister, Toni. He leaves to mourn from this marriage his son George (Tamika), son-in-law Jeffery Johnson and daughters-in-law Cassandra and Emily Arnold.

He and his third wife Gwen had two daughters, Veronica (Alvin Smith) and Renee Arnold. He also considered Gwen's son Reggie Calvert as his son.
