On February 20, 1958, Austin married Alicstine Royston. To this union five children were born: Austin Jr., Jerald, Christopher, Roderick and Terrence.

He attended Elroy Elementary School. He also attended Carpentry and Mechanic Schools. In 1953,
he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Korea and Japan. In 1971 he started his own construction business Swan Excavating Contractor. After 28 successful years, he retired. Austin was blessed with many skills and talents. He built his own home and helped to maintain his church.

At an early age, he accepted Christ at the St. Mary's Baptist Church. He later joined the Center Union MBC in Buda. Austin emjoyed singing in the choir and leading devotional services. Though often mistaken for a church deacon, Austin simply preferred working for the Lord unencumbered by a title. He continued to serve at Center Union, even during failing health, until his death. His favorite scripture was Psalm 121.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Joseph, Timothy, Edward, Everett and Samuel, and one sister, Susie.

He leaves behind his wife, Alicstine; their five sons (and spouses), Austin Jr. (Melanie), Jerald (Italia), Christopher (Mary), Roderick (Renee) and Terrence (Ashley); three sisters, Georgia Morrison, Virginia Swan, Eula Lee and one Brother, Lorenza Swan. Austin also leaves thirteen grandchildren, Shane, Caitlin, Carlos-Avery, Sarah, Mateo, Emilio, Krista, Jaime, Antonio, Cedric, DeSean, Lexa and Janae; one great grandson, Colin; and a host of relatives and friends.
