Artie Mae Hill was born December 7, 1911 in Austin, Texas to the late George and Ella Hill. She was the youngest sibling of 11 brothers and sisters.

"Doll" (as she was called by family and friends) was reared at Ebenezer Baptist Church and educated in Austin, attending Anderson High School and Huston-Tillotson University. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Order of Eastern Star.

Artie met James H. Johnson and they married in Austin in 1934. They moved to California in 1950 and settled in San Francisco.

Doll loved children and she worked with many children's groups, including an organization that helped blind youth. She was a master barber by trade and owned her own shop for many years.

In 1962, Doll went back to school and graduated fom UC Extension. While there she earned a degree in metaphhysics and went on to teach at the Unity Temple Church.

Even at the age of 99, Doll was still sharp, always remembering her friends and family members' birthdays and sending them cards.

James H. Johnson, husband, passedsed away in 2005. She leaves to cherish her memory son, James N. Johnson (a.k.a. Jan); two grandsons, David Johnson and Justin Johnson; two great grandchildren, Amber and Travis Johnson, all of Oakland, California; and a host of nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends.
