Sister Johnnie L. Kerley was a long time resident of Austin. She was born February 1, 1925, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Lee Andrew Fowler in Bastrop County. She was the beloved widow of the late Mr. William M. Kerley, Sr. to whom she was married for 46 years. Sister Kerley was the proud and supportive mother of two children, two step-children, an adopted child, seven grandchildren, one step-grandchild, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Sister Kerley received her education in the public schools of St. John Colony, Austin Independent School District, Crescent Institute of Beauty Couture, and Brackenridge Hospital. In the early years, she was the owner of Kerley’s Beauty Shop, and then changed professions to become an LVN charge nurse – her true passion. She retired after thirty years of employment in the nursing profession at Brackenridge and Holy Cross Hospitals, in Austin, Texas.

Sister Kerley had been an active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for 68 years. She served as a Deaconess, Secretary of the Deaconess: a faithful member of the Ushers, Greeters and Health Awareness Team, and Mission II - Eunice Circle. In 1954, she was Junior Mission president and sponsored a “Sunrise Prayer Meeting Service” for the ground breaking of the new sanctuary.

In true dedication and service to her church and family, Sister Kerley recently contributed $5, 000.00 to Ebenezer Baptist Church to refurbish the Communion table and purchase new Communion cloths, trays and cups, in loving memory of her husband Deacon William M. Kerley, Sr. and daughter Barbara Kerley Durst. She was a member of Kealing Neighborhood Association and the Imperial Court, Daughter of the Isis Cheops #182. Sister Kerley’s gift that she shared was helping the elderly and was a caregiver to her family, friends, and those in need. Sister Kerley has been presented many certificates and awards in recognition of her devoted Christian and Professional service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers, her husband William M. Kerley, Sr., her daughter Barbara Kerley Durst, two step sons, William M. Kerley, Sr. and Harry F. Kerley, Sr.

She leaves to mourn her passing the following: Son: Rev. Larry J. Kerley, Sr. (Wanda); Daughter: Mrs. Delores Fowler Young (Rev. Dave B. Young, Sr.); Granddaughters: Deirdre’ Kerley Young (Robert), Krista Kerley Bryant (Oliver, Sr.), Pamela M. Durst, Tamika A. Eason (Rev. Norris L. Eason), Naima C. Williams; Grandsons: Larry J.
