Rufus Douglas Shern passed away peacefully after a brief illness at the Texas Neuro Rehab Center. Rufus was born in Austin, Texas on February 3, 1924, an only child of Oscar and Mattie Shern.

He spent his childhood in Austin attending and graduating from Anderson High School. He then joined the U. S. Navy. While serving, he met and married Ms. Martha McCall-Shern. In this union a daughter Carolyn was born.

Upon returning to Austin, he finished college at Tillotson Collegiate and Normal Institute. After college he began working for the Austin State School teaching and after many years he retired. While retired, he began working with the Austin Independent School District as a crossing guard. Rufus loved the kids so much. He would babysit them before school so parents could get to work on time.

Those who knew Mr. Shern would agree he was a jokester who loved to "cut a rug" on the dance floor and enjoyed playing cards. Mr. Shern lived in Montopolis for countless years and will be remembered for his nature of helping others and his beautiful smile.

Mr. Shern was called home on Saturday night, May 14, 2011. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, first wife Martha, and granddaughter Tammy Mallard.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 32 years, Mrs. Dorothy Jo Shern; daughter Mrs. Carolyn DuBose; grandchildren, Tonnyna (Milton) Henderson, Ryan (Nicole) Shern, and Bruce Bussey; a special god son Leotis (Carolyn) Powell; great grandchildren, Amisca (Greg) Dickson, Nathalia Mallard, Jameka (Timothy) Maxwell-Jackson, Ryan Shern, Jr., Bryant Shern, Eschella, Damon Shern, Geovonni Smith, Craig Shern, and Carcel Acosta; four adorable great great granddaughters Tammy and ZaNiyah Dickerson, Kelys Glover and Jaylah Jackson.
