Shirley Evane Asbury Downs was born to Rev. Howard Asbury and Doris Wade Asbury on July 30, 1926 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Shirley was graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School for Girls in Boston on June 1, 1943. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree at Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia on June 3, 1947. While at Clark, she became, like her mother, a proud soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Shirley then continued her education and obtained a High School Teacher's Certificate in Social Science in July of 1947, subsequently teaching in the Atlanta public school system.

Her first marriage was to Lonnie Lay, an Atlanta native, and produced a daughter, Linda, born on march 14, 1952. shirley later married Robert "Bob" Downs in 1957 in New York City. Most of her professional career was as a probation officer in New York. After their retirement, Shirley and Bob moved to his hometown of Austin, Texas in 1989.

Shirley was preceded in death by her grandmother Alice Wade, her father the Rev. Howard deGrasse Asbury, her mother Doris Wade Asbury, her husband Robert Downs, her daughter, Linda Lay, her uncle George Asbury, and her five aunts Edith Wade Rollins, Alice Wade, Helen Wade Johnson, Constance Wade Hunt and Dorothy Asbury Mann.

Shge leaves to cherish her loving memories her grandson, Robert Downs, Jr. (Crystal); granddaughter Donese Moore (Davon); three great grandchildren, Tierra Payton, Grant Payton and Eleese Franklin-Downs; seven cousins, Bryant Rollins, Dr. Judith Rollins, Linda Hunt, Henry Johnson, Alexander Hunt, Alyce Johnson and Donna Mann; the Ritcherson family; and a host of other family members and friends.
