Gloria V. Pierce, age 81 of Austin, Texas, passed away peacefully March 20, 2011. She was born in Austin, Texas September 13, 1929. She immediately became the center of her success-oriented family. Her family-- mother, Mamie Brown-Thompson; grandmother, Bessie Brown-Johnson; three uncles, L.B., Wilbert and Elmo Brown--made her early life a happy one. Her journey through life continued to be a productive one that was highly motivated with high moral standards.

On December 21, 1951 Gloria married Timothy F. Pierce and about eight years later, a beautiful and happy baby girl came into their lives and into their hearts. From Gloria's entrance into their lives, through Austin public schools, high school activities, graduation, her degree from UT, her first job and every phase of her life brought them great joy through the rest of their lives.

Gloria's religious life was one of faith, service and thoughtfulness to the all powerful God. She accepted Christ early in her life at St. Peter's United Methodist Church. She was active in the church for many years and gave leadership to many key positions. The Pierce Family later joined Simpson United Church and Gloria was an active participant until her health failed.

Gloria received her education in the Austin Public Schools and graduated from Anderson High School with honors. She received her B S degree from Tillotson College with Summa Cum Laude recognition and a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. She was actively involved in positive activities at the college and was Basileus of the undergraduate chapter of the AKA Sorority for 2 years. Gloria received her MS degree from the University of Texas at Austin with a major in Bacteriology.

Gloria had a distinguishing and rewarding career experience. She taught in Texas public schools for several years and later at Huston-Tillotson College. She was employed for 34 years at the Texas Department of Health Lab. She "broke several color barriers" and was finally promoted to section chief of Clinical Bacteriology (later Microbiology) where she performed well for many years.

Gloria was preceded in death by her husband Timothy F. Pierce and her parents. She is survived by her daughter Gloria R. Pierce, her aunt Mary Brown and the Brown Family, her God-daughter Barbara Williams (James) of Houston, Texas, her friend/sister Lillie Ransom and other relatives and friends.
