He made the best tasting peanut butter ever, excellent lobster sauce, cakes from scratch, and barbecue sauce you couldn't resist. He loved gardening and fishing; and kept his and his parents yards perfectly manicured. William Henderson Gayle Jr., the first of three children, was born to Rev. William Henderson Gayle Sr. and Eula Barefield Gayle on June 1, 1938 in Waco, Texas.

William (Bill) attended public schools in Waco, receiving his high school diploma from A.J. Moore High School, and went on to Paul Quinn to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 3 years. Bill taught at Oakwood Elementary School then made a career change and joined the United States Air Force.

While stationed in Roswell, New Mexico (Walker A.F.B.), he decided to further his education by working on his Masters Degree in Counseling and Children's Literature Guidance at Eastern University of New Mexico (Portales, New Mexico).

Bill's outstanding duty performance caused him to be selected to a team rendering communications support to Melvin R. Laird, then Secretary of Defense, in Venice, Italy (1970). Bill loved piloting, coaching and played football, baseball and golf.

Throughout his military career, Bill earned many honors and awards. He was a willing and faithful servant to his Church and involved in Community activities. He, Chris and daughters joined Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church upon their arrival in Austin in 1971. In 1975, Bill was ordained a Deacon under the pastor ship of Rev. N. W. Bacon Jr. He had an awesome tenor/bass/baritone voice, and enjoyed singing with caroling every Christmas with Walter Monroe, Marion Woods, and Robert "Coach" Wilson. He served as Choir President, "Big Brother", Chairman of Finance Committee, and sang in the Male Chorus until his health would not permit.

William is preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Wylmette Heather Gayle, and his father, Rev. William Henderson Gayle Sr. He leaves behind to cherish precious memories, his loving and faithful wife of 48 years, Christine Gayle, two caring daughters, Errlyndia and Charla Gayle, all of Austin, Texas; his mother, Eula Barefield Gayle; brother Melvin Gayle (Peggy), sister Lynette Bacy (Emil), all of Waco, Texas; Sister-in-Laws Ernestine Davis of Wichita Falls, Texas, Mary Gipson (Larry) of Tacoma, Washington; Martha Wright (Lewis) of Raleigh, North Carolina, two Aunts Mildred Iglehart (Howard) of Waco, Texas, and Inez Hilman of Houston, Texas; and a host of loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Wylmette Heather Gayle Scholarship, Texas State University, 601 University Dr., San Marcos, Texas 78666.
