Carolyn Jean King Mercer

Carolyn Jean (King) Mercer
July 16, 1951 – March 1, 2011

As a little girl, some people knew her as 'the little girl with the really long hair.' Others identified her as the daughter of J.V. and Jeffrey King; a notable insurance sales representative and a teacher. Her name was Carolyn Jean King, born July 16, 1951, in Austin, Texas. Although she was an only child, her childhood was filled with joy from the love showered upon her by her wonderful parents, enjoying travels as a family, attending dance classes, and playing with friends.

Carolyn confessed her belief and faith in Christ at the age of eleven, and was baptized on Easter Sunday morning, at Ebenezer Baptist Church's Sunrise Service by the late Reverend Robert Rowe.

Although an only child, Carolyn developed friendships that were as close as sisters and brothers. She loved to entertain her friends not only as a child, but also into her adult life, as many looked forward to her Annual Tamale Party.

Carolyn graduated from S.F. Austin High School, 'Class of 69'. She later received her B.A. and Masters' degrees from St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas.

Carolyn married Robert Maxwell after her high school graduation, moved to Atlanta, and was blessed with one son, Kevin.

Later, Carolyn and her young son returned to Austin with her mother and a new chapter opened in her life. She reconnected with her first love as a teenager, Harry Mercer. GOD had plans for this couple. They reunited and married. They enjoyed many years of happiness and growing together in love. As a couple they traveled together, entertained, and were always available to help their families, friends, church, community and charitable causes.

Throughout their lives together, their love was like a beacon in the sky and epitomized 1 Corinthians 13 of being patient and kind. When she became ill, he comforted and cared for her – never leaving her side, always present to do what was needed.

Carolyn also found joy and fulfillment in her work at Texas Commission of Environmental Quality. Her work with the Mickey Leland Internship Program that helped hundreds of young people launch successful careers gave her great pleasure and she dearly loved each of her interns.

Carolyn served on the YWCA Board of Directors, worked on the Barak Obama Presidential Campaign, provided holiday cheer for Austin's Homeless, and was a member of the Northeast Austin Neighborhood Association.
Tuesday, March 1, 2011, GOD called Carolyn home to be with Him. Mourning her passing is her loving soul mate, Harry, son Kevin, three grandchildren, Kevin Jr. (Austin), Khelsea (Waco), and Khamirah (Austin), extended family and a host of friends.

Carolyn will be sorely missed, yet her memory will always bring a smile to our faces and joy to our hearts.

The family wishes to give sincere thanks and appreciation to the staffs of St. David's Medical Center (North and South), Drs. Lawrence Tokaz, Darren Geyer, Robert Morrison, Ryan Tierney, Rob Fuller, Eric Hoenicke, and William Barkek.
