Shirley was born July 27, 1960 to Mr. and Mrs. Willie Eugene Harris. She attended Norman Elementary, Dobie Jr. High and Lanier High School in Austin, Texas.

Shirley attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and was studying to become baptized at the time of her death. She was no stranger to this religion; she grew up knowing and learning about Jehovah. As a result, Shirley died knowing of God's promise of a new paradise-like system for all of his faithful followers.

If you were fortunate enough to have known Shirley, you knew that she never met a stranger and that she had a loving heart. She was always trying to give you information to get help with things, whether it was for help with information on a recipe or help finding information on an ailment. It was because of her lively and loving spirit that she acquired so many friends. And I'm sure that each one has a different story for how they met Shirley and why they love her as a friend! Although she will be missed sorely by her family and friends, we can be assured that she is now in a better place than any of us! And in Jehovah's own time, she will live again.

Shirley was preceded in death by her grandparents Cleo and Minion McDonald, as well as her paternal grandparents. She leaves to carry on her memory her husband of 28 years, Matthew Carothers, Sr.; her parents, Helen McDonald and Willie Harris Sr. both of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Sandra Harris and Diane (Leslie) Smith both of Austin, Texas; one brother, Willie (Dietra) Harris, Jr. of Round Rock, Texas; three daughters, Erica (Sunrah) Starling, Sharetta Carothers and Breanna Carothers all of Austin, Texas; one son, Matthew Carothers, Jr. of Washington D.C.; four grandsons, Quinn, Skyler, Sunrah Jr. and Xavier; one granddaughter, Patience; two aunts, Jewel (Michael) Newman of Austin, Texas and Mattie (Charles) Brooks of Hillsboro, Texas; one uncle, Lewis (Joyce) McDonald; and a host of nieces, nephews and special friends, all of whom she loved each and individually!
