Doris L. Mercer Johnson was born to Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Clinton Mercer, Sr. in Round Rock, Texas on November 29, 1926. Her parents preceded her in death.

She was baptized at an early age and became a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church of Round Rock, Texas. She attended and graduated from public schools of Round Rock and Austin. She earned B.S. and M.S. degrees from Huston-Tillotson University and The University of Texas at Austin.

After college she taught in Elgin, Texas at Washington High School, Elementary Schools, and Elgin Junior High School, teaching Music at all levels and teaching Spanish at all levels. She also taught after school programs to those who did not finish a formal education. Music was her passion and she was willing to teach piano to any person willing to learn.

Doris married Davis Preston (DP) Johnson (deceased) on July 19, 1953. One son, Van Kirk Johnson, the son of this union, also survived his mother.

Doris united with the Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Elgin, Texas where she was the Choir Director and Sunday School Teacher.

In 1972, upon moving to Austin, Texas, Doris along with her husband and son, joined Ebenezer Baptist Church, pastored by the Reverend Dr. Marvin C. Griffin. Doris thoroughly enjoyed being a member. She was a Sunday School Teacher, a member and officer of Mission II-Lydia Circle. Because of her love of music, she was the pianist for the Ebenezer Choir and Carol Choir. She received the Ebenezer Distinguished Christian Service Award for faithfully serving her Church Family and the Austin Community for many years.

Doris was a member of the Eastern Star in Elgin, Texas; a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Beta Psi Omega Chapter for over 50 years; Capital City Lioness Club, Austin, Texas and a member of the American Red Cross, Central Texas Chapter of Austin, Texas.

She leaves to cherish her memory son, Van Kirk Johnson; grandsons, Van Kirk II and Brandon Patrick Johnson of Austin, Texas; their mother Jocelyn Pumphrey Johnson of Houston; brother Wallace Mercer, Jr. and wife Callista of Pensacola, Florida; nieces Melanie Mercer Gamble of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Candace and Catrina Mercer of Pensacola, Florida; nephews, Wallace C. Mercer III, Garthaniel Mercer of Pensacola, Florida; cousins, great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and good, good friends.
