Dorothy Nell Washington Hewitt was born to Clarence and Rosa Fowler Washington on July 9, 1939. On July 9, 1955, Dorothy was joined in holy matrimony to the late James W. Hewitt, Sr., and to that union two children were born.

In the early years Dorothy professed hope in Christ and was united with the Webberville Ebenezer Baptist Church where she served as a faithful servant. Dorothy and James moved to Houston, Texas in 1956 where they raised both children. In 1972 the family moved back to Austin and united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church and served as faithful members. Dorothy and James worked side by side in the family-owned business “Dot’s Place” for many years.
