John's sunrise to earth was September 9, 1923 and was born to Charles Franks and Bessie Swain Franks in Dale, Texas. John started his religious search at an early age. He claimed his mark on Christ at a young age of 12. John was a member of Corinth Methodist Church in Dale, Texas. He moved to Austin, Texas and soon after joined Grant Chapel A.M.E. Church and was a member there for 25 years. John was on the Board of Trustees, Missionary, Head Parking Attendant and an usher. In the late 90's he joined the Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church where he was a member at the time of his home going. John was very active in church and loved the Lord with all his heart.

At an early age John was helping and working to provide extra income for him and his family. In his early teenage years until the age of 17, John was running cattle and a ranch hand on his family's land. At 17 years old John was drafted and served in World War II and the Korean War for the U.S. Army. When he returned home to Dale, Texas from serving in two wars, he continued to run cattle until 1952 when he came to Austin for another start. He worked construction, building famous landmarks in Austin such as Sears Roebuck in Hancock Center and several different landmark buildings downtown. In 1966 John became an employee of the City of Austin where he worked for the Street and Bridge Division for 27years and retired in 1993. After retiring from the City of Austin, John's new career was taking care of people, his family, his neighbors, his friends and most of, all his yard. He loved visiting family and friends at the hospital and nursing homes. He loved taking care of his yard and several neighbor's yards.

John was married to Mildred Blaine in 1960 and they stayed married for 5 years. In 1970 John married Bernice Edwards. She had one daughter from a previous marriage. John raised and took excellent care of his new daughter, Tonda. Bernice and John stayed married for 26 years, and they later divorced. John still took care of Bernice and Tonda.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Bessie Franks, his brothers AZ, Curry and Marcus Franks, his sisters Mandy Adams and Corine Whitsey, Bernice Franks, his wife, and Tonda Edwards, his daughter.

John leaves to cherish his memory his only grandson Artis Patrick Edwards of Austin, Texas; granddaughter-in-law Zameika Lemons-Edwards of Bastrop, Texas; his great grandson Artis Patrick Edwards, Jr. of Austin; his granddaughter Carmelita Edwards, great granddaughter Samantha Hervey; great great granddaughter, JaLaylah Coleman and great granddaughter Emari Harrison, great grandson Chris King; great grandsons Casey Frels and Joseph Foley, Jr., all of Austin, Texas; one brother, Walter Earl Franks of San Antonio, Texas; and one sister-in-law Cleola Franks of Austin; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
