Deacon Norman O. Carter, Sr. was born March 25, 1922 in Lytton Springs, Texas. He was the oldest son of Ammie and Georgia Carter, who preceded him in death.

Deacon Carter received his education in the Dale Independent School District. He was employed for many years by the University of Texas at Austin.

Deacon Carter accepted Jesus Christ, as his Lord and Savior, at the age of fourteen and united with the St. John Regular Baptist Church under the Reverend R. Q. Allen. Deacon Carter has been singing for the Lord since he was a young boy. After moving to Austin, he joined the First Baptist Church located on East 12th Street in Austin, Texas. Deacon Carter has been a faithful member of First Baptist Church for over 70 years. Deacon Carter loved singing and soon joined a quartet group upon arriving in Austin. Deacon later sang with The Original Hymn Revival.

In 1947, Deacon Carter met and married Gladys Harden Carter. This union lasted for forty-nine years until Gladys went home to be with the Lord. To this union, three sons were born: Norman Odell Carter, Jr., Calvin Bernard Carter (Dina), and Christopher Irving Carter (Penny).

Deacon Carter is preceded in death by his wife Gladys, granddaughter Jene` Carter and great grandson Ryan Roberson. He also is preceded in death by siblings, Ima Jean Carter Anderson, Era Marie Carter-Hill, Vera Marie Carter-Roland, and Ammie Carter, Jr.

Deacon Carter leaves to mourn his sons, Norman Odell Carter, Jr., Calvin Odell Carter (Dina), and Christopher Irving Carter (Penny); grandchildren, Tarsha Johnson, Kyra Fowler, Erica Carter, Monica Carter, Kristin Carter, Andrea Carter, Audrey Carter and Kryshona Carter; and great grandchildren, Jonathan Haywood, Jr., Kierra Simmons, Ne`Ryah Roberson, Kamari Roberson, Areya Roberson, Christopher Davis, Caleb Davis, and TerrNae Polk; sister Helen Carter; special family friend Seretha Manor Carter; and a host of relatives and friends.
