Leonard Eugene Crayton (Gene) was born April 28, 1937 in Austin Texas to Columbus Crayton and Virlle Arnold. Both parents preceded him in death.

He went home to be with the Lord April 26, 2010. He accepted Christ at an early age, under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Webb and later Rev. O. S. Davis, both of Ulit Avenue Baptist Church. He later joined New Lincoln Missionary Baptist Church. Leonard served as a Deacon at both Ulit Avenue Baptist Church and New Lincoln Missionary Baptist Church, under Pastor A.R. Evans, Sr.

Leonard married Maude Ester Ockletree on December 22, 1959. To this union one son was born who preceded him in death, Leonard Eugene Crayton, Jr. Leonard was faithful to his church and family until his health began to fail.

He attended Austin Public Schools and Lincoln High School in Snyder, Texas. He joined the U. S. Marine Reserve and later participated in Active Duty with the Marines. He worked at Austin Housing for over 30 years and retired from the Physical Plant at the University of Texas.

Leonard's favorite activity was reading the Bible, and his favorite Psalm was Psalm 18:1-3. Fishing was his favorite hobby.

Leonard leaves precious memories to his wife, Maude; four sisters, Edith Butler of Winter Haven, Florida, Alice Moore (Frazier), Wanda Crayton, Zelda Crayton, all of Austin; brothers, Columbus Crayton, Jr. (Joyce) of Paige, Texas, Joseph Crayton, Daniel Crayton (Robin), Horace Crayton (Rosemary), Michael Crayton, Virginia and Eulas Crayton of Winter Haven, Florida.
