Brother Willie Hayes was the son of George and Irea Hayes of LaGrange, Texas, born on December 27, 1921.

Willie was educated in LaGrange and Austin, Texas. He served four years in World War II. After serving his country, Willie moved back to Austin, Texas and married Miss Lucille Brown.

A man of strong Christian faith, Willie loved his church and faithfully served as a Steward and Usher Board member. Under two pastors, the Rev. W. D. Turner and Rev. Leo Griffin, he served diligently as Steward Pro-tem. He also served as Steward-emeritus under the leadership of Rev. Dr. W. Raymond Bryant and remained until his health failed.

Willie was an employee of Safeway Rental where he retired as a supervisor.

Willie departed this life on Friday morning, April 23, 2010 with his wife and family at his side.

Willie is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 63 years, Lucille Hayes; three dedicated daughters, Linda Hayes, Sheila Hayes-Matlock, Leila Hayes of Austin, Texas; a niece they helped to raise as one of their own, Maude Crayton (Leonard) of Austin; two grandsons, Thomas Matlock, Jr. and Byron "B.J." Maxwell, Jr.; five sisters, Ruthie Lee (Carl) of San Antonio, Texas, Inell Leonard of Los Angeles, California, Mabel Williams, Verda Daniels, Delores Charles Hodge of Houston, Texas; one brother, Farris Dickerson of East Bernard, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Adell Mackey of San Antonio, Texas and Betty Fuller of Austin, Texas; aunt Emma Hayes of Los Angeles, California and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
