R. A. Terrell was born on May 22, 1923 in Brazos County, Texas to Bill and Henrietta Terrell. To this union ten children were born. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters.

R. A. Terrell accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age while residing in Bryan, Texas and attended public schools there. He was united in holy matrimony to Christine Taylor on August 17, 1953. To this union no children were born. He retired from the Texas Highway Department after 30 years of service and also worked part-time as a mechanic at a local service station for 20 years. He was affectionately called "Sweetman" by family and close friends and was a lover of fine cars.
