Zella M. Axel Walker, third child, was born in Colorado County, Texas to the late Isaiah and Iona B. Axel on October 7, 1921. She was married to the late Clarence Walker on October 18, 1947. To this union two daughters were born, Clara and Cindy.

Sister Walker grew up in the Austin area and attended Austin public schools, graduating from the Old Anderson High School. She was a faithful and devoted member of Metropolitan AME Church. Her spiritual walk began at an early age under the pastorage of the late A.W. Harvey, Sr.

During her active years at her beloved Metropolitan AME Church, she worked with the Junior Usher Board, Pastor Aide Society and Sunday School. She joined the Senior Usher Board where she served as president for over 20 years. During this time she was also active in the Austin Interdenominational Ushers. On September 23, 2000 she was appointed by the Presiding Elder W. C. Ervin, III, Emeritus for the Senior Usher Board. She served diligently for many years until her health began to fail with Alzheimer's Disease.

She enjoyed and took pride in her potted plants and flower beds and would exchange plants with family and friends. She planted them all together in one section which she named her "Friendship Garden". Her passion for gardening was equaled by her cooking those delicious meals for famiy, friends and the neighborhood children.

She was employed during her earlier years at Marie Antoinette Lady's Ready to Wear Store as a supervisor in shipping and receiving for over 30 years and subsequently retired from AISD Casis Elementary School in food service.

Sister Walker was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three sisters and her loving husband of 55 years.

Her survivors include her two daughters Clara W. Cooney (Anthony) and Cindy Walker; two brothers Oblyn Axel (Annie) and Odis Axel (Vivian); one sister Ella Rutledge; two brothers-in-law Curtis Younger and Abner Jett; one sister-in-law Eunice Axel; two granddaughters Jessica and Melissa Miller ("her babies"); seven nephews; five nieces; and a host of relatives and friends.
