Karen Denise Brand was born January 19, 1968 in Bessemer, Alabama to parents Joyce E. Worford of Pflugerville, Texas and Calloway Worford, Jr. of Boston, Massachusetts.

She moved to Austin, Texas about 1995 from San Diego, California where she was a Navy wife for many years to ex-husband Darren Brand, who precedes her in death.

Karen's grace and strength were present in every moment of her life. Her deep faith and hope in Christ gave her inspiration as she raised her three children. Karen chose to love and teach her children within a community of faith. Mount Zion Baptist Church was a very important part of her family's life. Her involvement in the church included Assistant Secretary for the Sunday School Department, Teacher for the Children's Church, Administrator and Teacher for Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), Kids Across America (KAA), Sisters Coming Together and the Singles' Ministry.

Karen was an inspiration. Those who knew Karen personally and professionally knew they were in the presence of someone good. Kind and sweet-natured, Karen treated everyone with respect and care. Her smile was memorable, her manners were impeccable, and her demeanor kept everyone coming back for more. She was skilled at her profession and was an eager learner, never turning down a new challenge. Karen had a gift for spreading good will that is deeply missed.

How Karen loved her children! They were on her mind and in her heart no matter where Karen was: on the bus, behind a computer, in church, or resting in her chair. During her illness, knowing that the children were alright was a source of comfort to her. Robert Johnson, Ashley Brand, and Kourtney Brand will cherish Karen's memory, along with Karen's baby granddaughter, Aniyah Marie Brand. Karen loved her kids, her granddaughter, and her family! The prospect of cooking and visiting with family during holidays was pure joy to her!

Karen is survived by a large family which include parents Joyce E. Worford and Calloway Worford, Jr.; in-laws Ida and Robert Brand; grandparents Mary Kello and Calloway Worford, Sr.; a sister, Anna Lee-Worford; two brothers LaVerne Worford Johnson and Kenneth Worford; half-siblings Caleeta Fredericks, Nyteesha C. Worford, and Arohn M. Kee; aunts and uncles Della McCutcheon, Winifred and Ted Mack, Mary Byrd, Jean Reese, Teresa Kello, Michael Kello, and Efram and Geraldine Kello; cousins Denise Byrd, Melvin and Paula Byrd, Delores Smith, Sheila Byrd, Jermaine Reese, Jasmine and Steven Cosby, Ayanna Nicole Mack, and Patrice Mack; nieces and nephews LaTray Lee, Tramaine Lee, Travares Lee, Xzavier Worford-Johnson, Zhakary Worford-Johnson, KeAnna Worford, Jaden Worford, Kenneth Worford, Jr., and Jermaine Worford.
