Ira Joe Mitchell, Sr. was born the first child to Johnny Lee and Frankie Mae Ervin Mitchell the 1st day of November, 1945 in Coupland, Texas, Williamson County. He attended school in both Coupland and Austin Independent School Districts.

At an early age, he joined Blacks Memorial Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Pastor A. L. Patton and attended church with his mother as a young boy.

Joe was all about making his own way and being the man in charge. So, as he progressed in management, many other young men found themselves employed because he gave them jobs. One summer, Joe had a group of Mitchell relatives working for Howard Nursery on Koenig Lane in Austin, Texas.

While working and enjoying life as a young man, Joe met and married Bertha Louise Mitchell and to this union three children were born. Later in life, he married his current wife of 32 years, Ethel B. Mitchell and to this union one son was born.

After 20 years of praying by his wife and constant words of encouragement by the late Sis. Geraldine Reed, Joe became a member of St. John College Heights Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. W. M. Reed. Right away, Joe began serving as a door-keeper in the house of the Lord and later, Pastor Reed appointed him as a member of the Trustee Board. He worked diligently as a door-keeper whenever he was in town and until his health failed.

His parents and two brother preceded him in death.

Ira Joe Mitchell, Sr. is survived by his wife, Ethel B. Mitchell; eight children, Darryl (Bridgette), Iris (Robert) Simpson, JoAnn Mitchell, Ira Jr. (Jacqueline), Jeffrey, Debra Cobbs, Claudia (Jerome) Walker of Killeen, Texas and Joycelyn (Reginald) Williams; one son-in-law, Kevin Harper of Denton, Texas; twenty-three grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; five brothers, Jim Mitchell of El Paso, Texas, Roy (Esther), Douglas (Willie Jo), Larry (Debra) of Corpus Christi, Texas and Tommy; five sisters, Geneva (A.J.)
