Sarah Ann Harris Tanner was born on the 17th of October, 1917 to the union of Charles Harris and Maude Henderson Harris. She was the 5th of thirteen children. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and eight sisters.

Ann received Christ at an early age under the leadership of the late Rev. Hiram Wilson of New Birth Baptist Church of Nash Creek, Texas. She received her public education at the Hoover School in Guadalupe County and continued her formal education at Prairie View College and St. Philips College in San Antonio. During this time, Ann met and was courted by Emmett J. (E.J.) Tanner and later the two were married on September 10, 1943 and began the life of a Methodist Minister's wife on the campus of Wiley College.

She set up housekeeping at their first charge in Hondo, Texas. Appointments to Waco, Edna, Austin, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi found her supporting E. J. by singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School classes, taking care of the house and raising the Tanner boys who would number four with the arrival of Leon while assigned to Scruggs Chapel Methodist Church in Edna.

Moving to Austin following the graduation of Charles from Carver High School in Edna in 1965, afforded her many opportunities to apply skills she had trained for in school and demonstrated during vacation bible schools while in Waco and Edna. She loved teaching arts and crafts and found gainful employment at the Austin State School. She retired from the State after working 20 years teaching the mentally handicapped and devoted her time to the much anticipated travel and sightseeing with her husband until her health began to deteriorate.

She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 1997 and was cared for by her loving husband until his death in March 2003.

Following his death, she followed his wish that she live with Charles and Pat Tanner in Titusville, FL. She enjoyed seasonal visits to the North Country (Green Bay, Wisconsin) with Windsor and Therese Tanner.

The disease was insidious and left her with little memory of events that shaped the boy's lives but she was able to recall her favorite nieces and nephews up to several months before her death.

She died on September 17, 2009 in Titusville, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years (Emmett) and her eldest son, Samuel. She is survived by Charles Eugene and Patricia of Titusville, Fl; Windsor Joel and Therese of Green Bay, WI; and D. Leon Tanner of San Antonio, TX.

She leaves behind: two sisters, Maggie Williams of Rialto, CA; and Isabelle Woolridge of Seguin, Texas; one sister-in-law, Betty Harris of Houston, TX; one brother-in-law, John Smith of Rialto, C A; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
