Gerald Franklin Henderson was the sixth of eight children born to the late Kenneth and Jannie Henderson on October 9, 1937 in the Bastrop County community of Center Union near Smithville, Texas. On Friday, September 11, 2009 at the age of 71, he passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.

Gerald retired from the Travis County Community Supervision and Corrections Adult Probation Department after 34 years of service. Along with this long career, he also served in various other capacities throughout the Central Texas community, including 53 years of service to the Metropolitan African American Episcopal Church, 32 years on the Board of Directors for the Travis County Credit Union and 26 years on the City of Austin Firefighters’ and Police Officers’ Civil Service Commission.

Gerald is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Jannie Henderson; one brother, Stephen Henderson; and one sister Joyce Reynolds.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 48 years, Carrie; and four children, Verda Henderson of Austin, Texas, Gerald M. Henderson (Mary) of Smithville, Texas, Valerie Slaughter (Desmond) of Taylor, Texas, and Edna Jackson (Harvey) of Round Rock, Texas. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Whitney Epps, Kaylan Henderson, Tiffany Henderson, Nathaniel Jackson; and one great-grandson, Chance Jackson, Jr.

He also leaves five siblings, Horace Henderson (Mabel) of Detroit Michigan, Hayward Henderson (Sally) of San Antonio, Texas, Carrie Milligan (Edward) of Temple, Texas, Janie Ellison of Austin, Texas, Patria Meshack of Dallas, Texas; and a host of extended family and friends.
