O L Flowers, the younger of two sons of Sherley and Pallie Flowers was a lifelong resident of Bastrop County. His older brother, S T Flowers welcomed him on December 21, 1920. The two of them had loving grandparents, Emma and Bob Flowers and Amanda and Perry Hennington to spoil, teach, and mold them to be the men they were. Their early years growing up in the sand on Piney were overflowing with abundant love from an extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He met and fell in love with the woman of his dreams, Evelyn McShan, on the school grounds of Sayers School where they both attended. Today the water well still stands where he first expressed his affection for her in 1940. Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church (now merged with Greater Mt. Vernon Zion) has been his church throughout his life.

When World War II came, he bravely fought to defend and serve his country. After serving in North Africa, France, and Italy, he rushed home in December of 1945 and married Evelyn on January 10, 1946.

To the union six children were born, S. Evelyn (Shirley), Herbert, O L Isadore, Delores, and infant twins. My, oh, my, it was a busy time with four kids growing up in Elgin, Texas. From 1953 until 1967 one or more of his children were in school. During this time he worked full time at Butler Brick Company and on weekends to support all of the children's activities. No activity that the kids participated in was without his presence. He and Evelyn became officers in the Parent Teachers Organization.

After their last child went off to college, they continued to work in their churches with all the zest given by God. O L and Evelyn Flowers gave of their time and energy to such organizations as the Elgin Evening Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, NAACP, The Sayers Cemetery Association, Masonic Lodge and volunteered at the local nursing home.

To date O L and Evelyn have fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. The love and guidance he showed his children transcends to his grands. He supported their dreams and gave them the same direction he bestowed on his children.

O L Flowers was a loving husband and father. He and Evelyn were married for 63 years and celebrated their last anniversary with their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in Burnet, Texas. Memories of him will forever be cherished and his life will always symbolize great character and integrity.
