Ruby Alvilda Townsend

Ruby Alvilda Lewis-Townsend peacefully departed this earthly walk of life Saturday July 11, 2009 at 10:15 pm at the elegant age of 80. Ruby was born on May 8, 1929 in Austin, Texas to Leonard "Tex" Lewis and Madeline Bateman-Lewis. Ruby attended local Austin schools and Austin Community College. For years Ruby was employed as a health care provider in a supervisory capacity for special needs clients. She was also employed as a teacher assistant for AISD.

Ruby A. Lewis was united in matrimonial bliss to John Thomas Townsend, Jr. on January 12, 1953. This union of love was blessed with three children: Jerry, Madeline and John III. These children were loved, reared and educated. But most importantly they were instructed to build their life on the firm foundation of God's holy word.

When Ruby was young she accepted Christ as her savior and was a true believer of prayer. At the time of her demise she was a member and the First Lady of Peaceful St. James Baptist Church. She worked faithfully in the church with the Mission II Society, sang in the Senior Choir, taught Sunday School, worked with the Youth Department and portrayed several character parts in various church theatrical performances. When there was something to be done, she was willing to lend a helping hand. Ruby was always busy, but never too busy to express love and give guidance to her family as well as to others.

Ruby was a philanthropist, always thinking of and extending herself to others. She gave food to the hungry; she gave clothes and money to the needy and provided shelter to the homeless. Her words of comfort and hope were always: "Keep praying, God will make a way" or "Just wait, God is on the way." And if you were still in despair she would say: "Where is your faith . . . just keep praying. You will find your answer in the 23rd Psalms."

Ruby A. Lewis-Townsend was preceded in death by her father Leonard Lewis and her mother Madeline Bateman-Lewis. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband Rev. Dr. John T. Townsend, Jr.; her brother Clem "CB" Lewis, her sister Lorine Smith; three children: Jerry E. Townsend (Carol), Madeline J. Townsend-Lee, John T. Townsend, III; four grand-children: Jearnal M. Williams (Rodrick), Jovannique E. Townsend, Evan I. Townsend, Jalen Jefferson; and three great grand-children: Rodrick C. Williams, Jr., Jalaya M.Williams and Rakiah C. Williams.
