Althea Guinevere Hicks

The hands of the clock stopped for Althea Guinevere Reese Hicks on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 with her having lived a full and fruitful life.

Althea Reese was born in Hutto, Texas the third child of Reverend Richard and Minnie Reese on December 16, 1921.

She came to Christ as a child and in early life was quite active in the church. Her education was started in the public schools of Hutto and finished at L. C. Anderson High School of Austin. She furthered her education at Samuel Huston College (now Huston-Tillotson University) where she earned her B.A. degree in English and continued a the University of Texas at Austin where she did graduate work. She taught in the Austin Independent School District and retired after 33 years of teaching.

In January, 1973, she married Booker T. Hicks, Sr. Their marriage of twenty-six years was brought to a close at Booker Sr.'s death in 1998.

She became a member of Olivet Baptist Church in 1956 and used her talents in a myriad of ways, namely a member of Deacon's Wives, Women's Missionary Union, Choir, Sunday School Teacher, Helping Hands Committee, and Church Resolution Clerk. She remained a member of Olivet for over thirty years, when she relocated to Virginia Beach, Virginia with her daughter. There she joined the historic First Baptist Church - Bute Street in Norfolk, Virginia where she was embraced as if a life time member. She was also active in the Alpha Kappa Zeta Chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., where she served in various capacities.

She is survived by her daughter, Stephanie King of Virginia Beach, Virginia; two step sons, Ben Hicks, Booker Hicks, Jr. (Estella) both of Austin, Texas; a sister, Minnie Reese of Austin, Texas three grandsons, Nedric Smith (Diana), Norell Smith both of Austin, Texas and Nigell King of Atlanta, Georgia; six great grandchildren; five nieces, four nephews; and a host of grand nieces, nephews and friends.
