Clifton Townsend, Sr. was the third born to the late Riley Townsend and Mae Liza Townsend (Rivers) on October 3, 1922, in Burton Texas; he was known to his family as "Pappy Joe."

He attended school in Burton, Texas and Round Top, Texas School Districts. In 1937 he accepted Christ as his personal savior before moving to Bartlett, Texas. In 1949 he moved to Austin, Texas and became a Deacon under Reverend Thelman Gray. On December 18, 1961 he married Ida Maxfield, and to this union three children were born.

In the summer of 1991, Clifton united with St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Robert E. Dawkins, as a deacon. He continued under the leadership of that pastor and the current Pastor Ivie J. Rich. He was Vice President of the Deacon Board for sixteen years, and never tired of his duties until his health declined. In 2007 he was presented with a plaque as Deacon of the Year. One of his greatest concerns was about the church moving forward. He had words of wisdom for everyone; his anchor in Jesus was deep.

For a number of years Clifton worked as a printer's assistant at Taylor Printing Company. He also worked for Austin Concrete as a mechanic for seventeen years before retiring. His hobby was raising horses, riding and selling them. He was the President of the "Sunset Riders"—a horse riders club, and his favorite horse was "Danny Boy."

Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers, one adopted brother, two daughters, one grandson and two nephews.

Those left to keep Clifton's memories alive, his wife: Ida J. Townsend, sons: Ricky V. Gleason, I (Ivory), Clifton Townsend, Jr., daughters: Diane Gleason, Teresa Baker. A nephew he cared for as his son, Ernest "Bill" Townsend, II, thirteen grandchildren: Tameika Gleason, Nicholas Joyner, Ricky Gleason, II, Charles Deshay, III, Victoria Gleason, Shannon Shaw, Justin Hickman, Jaimee Shaw, Alexius Gleason, Aliyah Gleason, Charmira Maxwell, Charletta Maxwell and Bené Jacobs; four great grandchildren and one God-grandson, C. J. "Tyke" Meeks. Three nieces and four nephews, a host of great nieces and nephews, friends, and other relatives. Favorite brother-in-law, Elmo Irvin, Sr. and a special devoted friend, James R. Shaw.
