Dorothy Nell Spence, aka "Mama Dot", was the fourth child born to W. T. and Clara Bright on August 14, 1940 in Lockhart, Caldwell County, Texas. She was preceded in death by her father, mother, brother Willie Bright and husband John "Mickey" Spence.

Dorothy graduated from George W. Carver High School in Lockhart, Texas in 1960. She married John M. Spence and to this union three children were born. She found a passion in working with individuals with disabilities while working at the Lubbock State School. She transferred to the Austin State School where she later retired after 20 plus years.

She became a member at an early age at First Baptist Church in Lockhart, Texas. She later joined St. James Missionary Baptist Church where she remained a member until she was called to rest.

As many would agree, Mama Dot never met a stranger. It was her high energy, loving spirit and genuine interest that drew people to her like a magnet. For those who knew Mama Dot well, life was always filled with joy. She loved and cared for all children including her own and raised her nieces, nephews and grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mama Dot made an impact on the lives of many. She will be missed.

She entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at home surrounded by family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memories to her devoted and loving daughters, Carmen J. Duval of San Antonio, Texas, Paula D. Hockaday (Daryl K.) of Pflugerville, Texas and Phyllis D. Pinckney (Eugene) of Biloxi, Mississippi; six grandchildren, Daryl A. (Tristen), Alicia, Octavia, Nadja, Romesha and Ashley; five great grandchildren, De'Ovean aka DaDa, Mikaylah, Aaliyah, Sariyah and Tristen aka Little Man; special niece Tiffany Spence of Houston, Texas; brother and sister, Jessie Ray Bright and Bessie Mae McGreenwood of Lockhart, Texas; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, other relatives and special friends.
