Raymond Ellis was born December 10, 1927 in Giddings, Texas, Lee County to Mr. Earnest Ellis, Sr. and Mrs. Carrie Lee Hall Ellis, both of whom preceded him in death. He was the twelfth child born. He had seven brothers, Robert A. Ellis (deceased), Julius O. D. Ellis (deceased), Joe Nathan Ellis (deceased), Ronald Ellis (deceased), Donald Ellis, Tom Thumb Ellis (deceased), and Earnest Ellis, Jr. (deceased); four sisters, Earnestine E. Dobbins (deceased), Mamie Ellis (deceased), Carrie Ellis (deceased), and Ola Mae Ellis Porter.

His wife, Mary Ellis, preceded him in death in 1988. Three daughters and one son are left to mourn their father's passing.

He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age. He moved his membership from New Orleans, Louisiana after the disaster from Hurricane Katrina to Nineteenth Street Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend M. C. Walker and remained there until his death.

On Friday, March 13, 2009, Raymond quietly slept away at his home in Austin, Texas.

He leaves to mourn his passing three daughters, Jessie Thomas Brown of North Carolina, Annette Hill of Benton Harbor, Michigan, and Deborah A. Smith of Bronx, New York; one son James N. Smith of Albany, New York; one sister, Ola Mae Ellis Porter of Austin, Texas; a brother, Donald Ellis; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
