Rev. Hugh Ellis (Buddy) Smith

Hugh Ellis Smith was born the seventh of ten children to Tommy and Mary Smith on April 14, 1936 in Waggoner, Oklahoma.

He confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized in 1954 by Rev. S. A. Davis, here at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He graduated from L. C. Anderson High School and was immediately drafted into the U. S. Army.

On November 26, 1957, he united in holy matrimony to Fayetta Winford. To this union five children were born.

He began preaching under the auspices of Pastor Dr. G. V. Clark at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church and preached his first sermon on April 7, 1976. He graduated in May, 1981 from the Guadalupe College in Seguin, TX with a Bachelor of Arts in Theology, and was the valedictorian of his class. Zion Rest Baptist Church called him as their Pastor in 1978 where he served for six years. He also served as pastor for nine years at the Rosewood Avenue Baptist Church. In 1996, he was called to Pastor at St. Paul Primitive Baptist Church where he served faithfully for ten years, until his health failed. Thereafter, he became Pastor Emeritus.

He was employed with the University of Texas at Austin and worked for thirty-one years until he retired in 1998.

He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and two sisters Sedalia Burkhalter and Macy Dukes and one brother Charles Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Fayetta Smith; his children, Pamela Thompson (Melvin), Auandre Smith (Andrea), both of Austin, TX, Keith Smith (Sharon) of Sierra Vista, AZ, Melissa Smith-Forney, and Christopher Smith (Stephanie) both of Los Angeles, CA; sisters Lila Jaime of New York, NY, Ethel Smith of Keene, TX; brothers, Abe Smith (Bobbie) of Los Angeles, CA, Willie Smith (Bernice) of Rowlett, TX, Lawrence Smith of Austin, TX and Tommie Smith of Alexandria, VA; fifteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of relatives and friends.
