Winnifred Edna Walters (nee Grappie) was born in Toco, St. David, Trinidad, the youngest of the children of Matthias and Martha Dillan. Growing up, Winnie, as she was fondly called, was always dancing and happy and full of life. As a young woman, she learned her seamstress trade after completing her schooling in Toco. While attending a local policeman's ball, she met her future husband, Denny Walters. They married in 1960 and were the proud parents of Juliet Ann "Cheryl", Martin Dave, and Valerina Gail. After several moves around the island with her husband, they migrated to New York City in 1968, settling in Brooklyn. Winnifred worked as a key punch operator for years in New York, while raising her three children. After many years in Brooklyn, Winnifred moved to Austin, Texas in 1989 and again began a business as a local seamstress. She made numerous friends through her shop on Parkfield and always had a deep and abiding appreciation for all her customers.

Winnifred was a faithful Christian and devoted member of Alpha Seventh Day Adventist. She was a true prayer warrior and helped develop the intercessory prayer ministry at the church. She was also active in the Trans Caribbean Network of Austin, fondly called "the old TCNA" by her. She loved the people she came into contact with and was always there to offer an encouraging word, a friendly ear, and always ready to share a joke or two. Her interests were simple and she enjoyed things that kept her mind sharp. Her family was very important to her and she made sure she was always in contact with someone.

Winnifred was preceded in death by Denny; her parents Matthias and Martha; her siblings Adelia, Nelcia, Lenora, Elvira and Clarissa; her brother Evans; and nephews Errol, Vernon and Kingsley.

Winnifred is survived by her sister Lucilla Lewis and brother Cornelius Grappie of Trinidad; her children Juliet, Martin, and Valerina; nieces Sherma, Odette, Hazel, Deborah, Pearl, Angela, Curline, Sherron, AnnMarie, Donna and Evelyn; and nephews, Elton, Mickey, Eric, Lyndon, Delano, Pat, Emmerson, Alvin, Glenroy, Imbert, Dean, Dirk, Farrison, and Irwin; numerous grandnieces and grandnephews and many surrogate sons and daughters.
