James Kent Brawley was born the third of six children on February 16th, 1962 in Austin, Texas. He was also known to family and friends as "Skeeter" and "Kenny Blue."

He attended Austin High School and graduated in 1980. After high school he joined the U.S. Army where he served for twelve years and fought in Desert Storm. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army with three Bronze Stars.

After his Military career he moved back to his hometown of Austin with his family where he spent most of his life doing what he was passionate about, cooking for others.

He was baptized in the Name of The Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit in 2005 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.

Preceding him in death is his two grandmothers Daisy Wright and Alvina Ockletree; stepfather Arthur Black and stepsister Kathy Black.

He leaves to celebrate his life memories; his two children: daughter, Khadija Watson; son, Jamelle Brawley; the mother of his children, Khadija Brawley; mother, Lula Black; father Donald S. Ockleberry Sr.

His siblings: One brother, Donald Ockleberry Jr.; four sisters, Vanessa Slaughter (Wayne); Bessie Crayton (William); Chante Williams (Jazzmon); Shirley R. Shaw (Michael); one stepsister, Linda Ockleberry; two step brothers, Reginald and Tyrone Black; and a host of nieces and nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
