Susanella James Phillips, after a long illness, passed away peacefully at Hearthstone Health Rehabilitation Center in Round Rock, Texas, on March 15, 2017. She was born on August 9, 1924 in La Grange, Texas. She was 92 years old. She was oldest of four children born to Patrick and Emma James.

She confessed her love for Christ at an early age at Big Springhill Baptist Church in Oldenburg, Texas. She later moved to Austin, Texas and joined David Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member and prior to her health challenges she served as President of Mission One, was a member of the Senior Choir, involved in the Platinum Plus Senior Adult Ministry, and was also a Sunday School Teacher. She was also honored as Woman of the Year and enjoyed involvement in the Achievement Club. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 23.

She attended Fayette County public school system, and in her adult years she took classes at Austin Community College. She retired from both Westminster Manor Nursing facility and also from doing private duty home healthcare part time.

She was a widow twice over and a loving mother of five. She loved her children as well as grandchildren very much. When she wasn't at church serving the lord, she loved gardening and cooking for family and friends. She was also famous for her peach cobbler and strawberry cake. She was also known to be a sharp dresser with a sweet and kind spirit, and always had a smile on her face. She was well loved.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Emma James, husbands, Ira Grant, and Walter Phillips, a son Cuemel Tyrone Grant, and a great grandson Jaquay Daveon Anderson.

She leaves to cherish her memories, four children, Connie Grant (Susan) of Dallas, Texas, Jearline "Jeri" Stephens of Round Rock, Texas, John Phillips (Cynthia) of Pflugerville, Texas, and Linda McIntyre of Austin, Texas. She also leaves eleven grandchildren, twenty-five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandsons. Sisters, Ezella Dobbins of Austin, Texas, Odessa Price (John) of San Antonio, Texas, and brother Patrick James of Chandler, Arizona, and a host of other relatives and friends.
