Jimmie Verdell Smith, Sr. was the sixth of seven children born to Cleo H. Smith and Lula Reese. Born November 11, 1934 in Manor, Texas, he became a respected scholar and leader. He attended Manor schools and was Valedictorian of his senior class of 1954. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball in the 1960's and following his grandsons' events throughout the 80's and 90's. Of course there were the Spurs and Cowboys he also followed. He began his career as a truck driver and later became a school bus driver for Del Valle Independent Schools, until he retired in 1994.

Deacon Jimmie Smith accepted Christ at an early age and spent most of his life serving as a member of Ebenezer, Webberville, which later became New Light Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Austin. He served proudly in Church ministry, leading in multiple elected offices; Chairman of Brotherhood, Chairman of Deacons, President of Deacon Board, Sunday School Superintendent, Vice Chairman of Deacons, BTU President, Carmel Lodge Parliamentarian.

August 20, 1954, he was joined in holy matrimony to Juanita K. Washington. To this union, three children were born. Jimmie was highly respected and honored as a great father, grandfather, and loyal and trusted friend and husband.

He leaves to mourn his passing, three sisters, Cleora McVade and Cornelius Spence of Austin and Lula Shirley of Waco; two daughters, Gloria K. Smith-Bailey (Dan III), and LaRachel Robichaux of Austin, and one son, Jimmie V. Jr. (Jacqueline) of Bedford, Texas; one God-daughter, Van Tieu Bennett of Leander, Texas; One granddaughter, Shatanya Robichaux; Six grandsons, Damian Robichaux, Dan IV, Brandyn, and Marlon Bailey; Anthony and Brian Smith; Two great granddaughters, Essence S. Peterson-Robichaux and Adrianna Noble; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
