Utaku Johnson Tennerd

Utaku Johnson Tennerd was born on September 4, 1916 in La Grange, Texas. She was one of 13 children born to Samuel Amos Johnson and Bessie Johnson. She was blessed to live a wonderful life of 98 years. She departed this life on March 21, 2015.

Utaku was united in Holy Matrimony to Jarrett Leon Martin, Jr., to this union three children were born, two girls and one boy, Ruby, Jerrene, and Eugene. For many years she made being a nurses aid and health care worker her vocation.

She confessed a belief in Christ at the age of 17 under the leadership of Rev. N.S. Brown at the Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church; where she served in the choir as a 1st soprano. During her marriage to Jarrett L. Martin she continued her Christian journey at the Olivet Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend F. D. Davis, where she served in the choir. In later years she moved her membership to Mt. Olive Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Herbert A. Sneed, where she served in the choir and Mission II. In 1964 Utaku found her ultimate earthly Christian home at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend F.C. Ransom, and continued under Reverend A. W. A Mays as a faithful member until her death. She was a loving and caring mother, sister, aunt, grand-mother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend.

She was preceded in death, by her parents, Samuel Amos Johnson and Bessie Johnson, eleven brother and sisters, daughter Ruby Washington, son Eugene Martin, grandsons Robert Johnson, Sr., Kenneth Johnson and Willie Johnson.

Utaku is survived by her daughter Jerrene Johnson; her sister Delphia Hart and her grandchildren, Edward Shepard, Larry Johnson, Wanda Stoglin, Gary Johnson, Pamela Johnson, Arthur Johnson Jr., Charles Johnson, James Johnson, Annis Harris, Ella White, Floyd Glascoe, Phillip Glascoe, Julian Glascoe, Tyrone Glascoe, Elsie Glascoe, Cecelia Glascoe, Vanessa Hunter, Sheila Ray, 32 great grandchildren, a host of great – great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, Mount Sinai Family and friends.
