Mrs. Thelma Clarissa Calhoun was born on July 20, 1911, in Austin, Texas to Bessie L. and Ishmael R. Dotson and was the first child of their seven children. She was a devoted and loving wife to the late Theodore C. Calhoun for forty nine years and to their union was born one daughter, Patricia C. Calhoun.

Thelma fervently believed in Jesus and the power of prayer. She surrendered her life to Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a tender age and was baptized at First Baptist Church, Austin, TX. She was a faithful member of Ebenezer Third Baptist Church in Austin for over seventy five years. There, she was the founder and director of the children's choir. Mrs. Calhoun served as a faithful Deaconess in addition to supporting numerous ministries including Mission II Martha Circle, Sunday School Business and Professional Women's Class and Discipleship Training, Group 4. When Mrs. Calhoun joined her daughter in Carrollton, Texas, she became affiliated with Hamilton Park United Methodist Church, Dallas, Texas. In stature, Mrs. Calhoun was a soft-spoken petite person but had the impact of a giant on anyone who came in contact with her. She exemplified moral excellence and was an obedient servant and faithful disciple of Christ until her death.

Mrs. Calhoun spent most of her life inspiring and equipping children to achieve their ultimate potential in life. After graduating from "Old" Anderson High School, Austin, Texas, Thelma received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Prairie View State Normal and Industrial College, Prairie View, Texas in 1934, a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan and Education Specialist Certification, University of Texas, Austin. Mrs. Calhoun began her professional career as the Travis County Supervisor for the African-American schools. She later joined the Austin Independent School District as a Reading Specialist.

Thelma exemplified a heart for service and used her God-given creative and organizational talents to support numerous community, civic and service organizations. Among these were Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Austin Alumnae Chapter, for 70 plus years, a charter member of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc, Capital City Chapter and Children's Haven Association which benefits children in need in the Austin area. She received recognition and numerous awards for her civic and service achievements.

Thelma Clarissa Calhoun went home to be with her Lord and Savior while resting peacefully at Brookhaven Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Carrollton, Texas on January 25, 2015. She was dearly loved by staff and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Theodore C. Calhoun, two sisters and three brothers. She leaves to celebrate her life and cherish her memories her loving daughter, Patricia C. Calhoun of Carrollton, Texas, her devoted brother, Alfred Dotson (Ruth) of Austin, Texas and a host of loving family and friends. We were very blessed to have had her with us for an amazing 103 years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ebenezer Third Baptist Church Building Fund, Austin, Texas.
