She accepted the Lord at an early age and was baptized at Barksdale Air Force Base, LA. On July 26, 1994, she married Armando Martin near New Port Ritchie, Fla.

As a young girl, Sandra was an avid participant in Girls Scouts. She attended Louisiana State University, Gallaudet University and earned her bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of Texas at Austin.

The Del Valle Independent School District honored Sandra for 30 years of service in education in May 2010. She became a deaf education teacher in Texas school districts until her retirement.

After a courageous, 11-year battle with lymphoma, she succumbed to the illness in the early hours of Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at an Austin hospital.

She leaves to cherish her memory her dedicated husband Armando Martin of Austin; son Nathan Martin and daughter Nya Martin, both of Austin; stepson Maurice Martin and stepdaughter Vanessa Martin, both of Austin; father and stepmother Ernest and Nitida Smith of Manchaca; brother and sister-in-law, Ernie and Shawn Smith of Buda; brother-in-law and his wife Patrick and Martha "Mattie" Stanford of Round Rock; a granddaughter, Olivia Martin of Austin; aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dedicated friends.
