Bettye Obershan Scott was born September 20, 1940 to Ambrus and Vida Cyphers in Lockhart, Texas. The youngest of their six children, Bettye was baptized at Simpson United Methodist Church in 1942, by Rev. T. M. Bruton. Bettye graduated from the L. C. Anderson High School in Austin, Texas in 1957. She graduated as an honor student from People's Business College in 1960, and was elected Class Speaker. Bettye married Roosevelt Obershan in 1962 and Joseph Scott in 1983. Sh retired from Teacher Retirement System of Texas in 1997, after 31 years of service as a Retirement Counselor. Always an engaged citizen with a strong sense of civic duty, Bettye volunteered faithfully as an Election Poll Worker in Travis County.

A devout Christian, Bettye served on numerous boards and committees at Simpson. As Chair of Evangelism, she spearheaded revivals, fund raisers, and anniversary programs. As Church Lay Leader, Bettye assisted the pastor in several areas, including serving Holy Communion to the sick and shut-in. Among the various outreach ministries she promoted were Clothes Closet and Safe Place (a center for battered women). She was a longtime member of United Methodist Women, and was elected Vice President of the Austin District UMW Mission Team in 2012. Bettye was also a certified Lay speaker in the SWTC and received their Leadership Award from Bishop Ray Owens, After a profound experience with the Walk to Emmaus in June 1998, Bettye became an active member of the Emmanus Community, sponsoring many pilgrims on the walk.

Bettye was a devoted mother to Michael and Tracy Obershan, and worked hard to see that they flourished and received all they needed to become outstanding human beings. Their education was important to her, and she considered seeing them receive their college degrees among the greatest moments of her life. Her grandson Marcus Obershan was her pride and joy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Willie Jo Turner and Agean Arnold and brother Arvil Cyphers.

On August 27, 2013 a caring family was left to mourn that includes her sons Michael and Tracy Obershan and his wife Sabrina; sisters Lena Fay Sauls and Barbara Daniels and her husband Bobby; grandchildren Marcus, Kadejah, Omar, and Aubrey Obershan; nephews Kenneth Banks and Roy Hill; nieces Jennifer Hill, Brenda Williams, Judy Turner, Amber Williams, Carlisha Neely and her children Mark and Willard III; brother-in-law Robert Turner and his wife Linda Turner and many other loving family members and friends.
