Hayward McNeil, Jr.

Hayward McNeil, Jr. was born April 8, 1936, in Round Top, Texas to parents Hayward and Zelma McNeil. He was the youngest of three boys, Otis, Clifton, and Hayward Jr. Hayward attended public schools in Thrall, Thorndale, and Elgin and graduated as part of Elgin's Booker T. Washington High School's Class of 1956. At Booker T. Washington High School Hayward was a member of the football, basketball, and track teams and participated in choral.

Hayward professed his faith in Jesus Christ at an early age. In Elgin he joined the Mount Moriah Baptist Church, and was eventually ordained as a Deacon at the Pleasant Bethany Baptist Church in the mid-1960's under the leadership of the late Rev. J.E. James. Upon relocating to Austin and uniting with the St. James Baptist Church in 1987, he was installed to the Deacon Board under the late Rev. E. M. Franklin and continued to serve under Pastor B. W. McClendon until his passing.

Professionally, Hayward worked as the supervisor of Huston Tillotson College's grounds & building industrial-maintenance crew for many years until his early retirement due to failing health in 1998. Even after his retirement and health challenges Hayward enjoyed fishing and was an avid fan of college and professional sports. As a testament to his independent personality, he frequently enjoyed rooting against hometown and regional favorites. Hayward will be most remembered as a kind and gentle man with a deep "booming" laugh.

He was preceded in death by his parents Hayward and Zelma McNeil; two brothers Clifton and Otis McNeil; former wife Manda Simpson-McNeil.

Hayward leaves to celebrate his life: his wife of 25 years Geneva E. McNeil; two children Sherry (Scott) Manson, and Bruce (Nikki) McNeil both of Austin, TX; four step-children Earnestine Huff and Charles Simmons both of Austin, TX; Green A. (Rachel) Blocker, Jr. of Clovis, NM; Byron C. (Karen) Blocker of Silver Spring, MD; sister-in-law Pearl M. Thomas of Ettrick, VA; brother-in-laws Clifford Brown and Stevenson L. Dansby both of Houston, TX; 22 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews relatives and friends.
