Edna Ester Johnson was born April 26, 1912, in Creedmoor, Texas, to Johnnie Atwood and Ellen Wheeler Atwood. She attended the Negro Community School in the Creedmoor area.

Edna Ester Johnson accepted Jesus Christ at an early age. She united with the Williamson Creek Baptist Church and was baptized under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend S. A. Davis. (Williamson Creek Baptist Church was later moved to Austin, Texas and renamed Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.) Edna loved to sing and served as a member of the choir and youth group.

Edna Ester Johnson was united in Holy matrimony to George Winfield Johnson on July 10, 1932. To this union (six) children were born.

Edna Ester was employed in the Cleaning Services Department at the University of Texas at Austin. She also worked as a Food Service employee for the Austin Independent School District.

Edna moved to Compton, California in 1955, where she joined the Tabernacle of Faith Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Frederick D. Ferrell. Edna served as a member of the choir, women's auxiliaries and in other capacities as needed.

She was employed by the Eldon Industries Toy Factory in Hawthorne, California. After retiring from Eldon's she began working as a Nurse's Aide for the Martin Luther King Hospital in Compton, California. Edna Ester Johnson was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Austin, Texas and Compton, California.

Edna Ester Johnson was a kind and loving Christian woman. She was also a member of the city's Foster Grandparents Program for which she received numerous accolades. One of her prized awards was a beautiful plaque she received during her 10th year celebration for being an outstanding Foster Grandparent for the City of Compton. During her stay in Compton, California she was the grandparent to Chanelle Blowe an adoptive grandchild, for which she cared for and nurtured for 18 years.

As her health began to fail, Edna moved back to Austin, Texas and united with the True Light Missionary Baptist Church where the Reverend J. R. Williams is the Pastor. She was a very vocal member that loved to praise the Lord.

Edna celebrated her 101st birthday in April of this year with her family and friends, the staff and patients of the Walnut Hills Convalescent Center, Austin, Texas. Thank God for His Blessings!

Edna Ester Johnson went home to be with the Lord at 2:58 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2013. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Freddie Ruth Johnson and 3 grandchildren.
