Gene Leslie Sampson, Sr. entered eternal rest on April 6, 2013. He was born on May 6, 1939 in Cedar Creek, TX.

He attended Emile High School in Bastrop, Texas where he participated in all athletic activities. He graduated from High School in 1958, and continued his education at Houston-Tillotson College. While at Huston-Tillotson, he participated in the sit-ins at Woolworths Five and Dime Stores to integrate business in Austin, Texas. He also joined Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Gene worked at the Driskill Hotel to pay tuition for his wife and himself.

In 1962, Gene graduated from Huston-Tillotson College with a Major in Biology and a minor in Mathematics.

In 1962, he was hired at Mary A. Brown High School in Smithville, Texas as a teacher and Coach of Boys and Girls Athletics. During that time his team won the State Football Championship and State Runner-Up Basketball. He was also a Little League baseball coach, Boy Scouts Leader, and Adult Education Director. Gene did graduate studies at Prairie View A&M University where he also participated in State Debate team and where he married his High School Sweetheart Doris DeShay.

In 1966 Gene transferred to Smithville High School where he taught Physical Education, Reading, Spelling, History, and Biology. He was the first selected to the First High School Assistant Principal. Gene was then assigned to Smithville Jr. High School where he remained for 24 years. From Smithville Jr. High School he was reassigned to Mary A. Brown Primary school and then to the Central Office as Federal Program Director. During this period the school won the Successful School Award and received a Cash award of $35, 000.00 for student achievement.

He received his Master's Degree from Texas Southern University and received his Superintendent Certification from Southwest Texas State University.
He taught students labor market skills during the summer.

Gene was active in 7 State and Community activities and served on many boards and committees. He was President of Smithville Lions Club, Director of Chamber of Commerce, member of Smithville Library Board, Served on the Selective Service board, Board member Smithville Community Clinic; Inducted in the Hall of Honor Prairie View A&M Interscholastic League, Director of Bastrop County Appraisal Board, President of Huston-Tillotson Alumni Chapter of Bastrop County, Chair of the Deacon Board at Wyldwood Baptist Church of Cedar Creek, TX where he and his family are members.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents and daughter Jacqueline Sampson; he is survived by his wife Doris and Gene's family: Gene Jr., Anthony, Debra, Latoya, Mary, Aaron, Tony C, Jessica, and Calvin Gilmore. Brother Huet Sampson (Dorothy), Brother Ret. Col. Phillip Thorne Sr., Aunt's Betty and Itasca Sampson, Extended family Rev. L.J. Thorne's family and a host of relatives and friends.
