Kenneth Black, Sr. was born April 6, 1949 to Howard Black and Pearlie Knotts-Black of Austin, Texas. He was the only child born from this union. His mother later met and married Army Sgt. George D. White in 1952 and together they reared him. Kenneth accepted Christ at an early age and attended public schools in Germany, New Jersey, and graduated from Austin High in 1967 after which he attended classes at Prairie View A&M University.

Kenneth united in marriage with Florence Overton on November 1, 1968. That following year they welcomed their first child, Ericka. Kenneth worked at the Fine Paper Company of Austin as well as Gary Job Corp in San Marcos, Texas. It was not uncommon for him to hold multiple jobs at once to support his family. In 1973, Kenneth joined Southwestern Bell and later that year they welcomed their second child, Kenneth, Jr. They moved to their current residence in Northwest Austin in 1979 welcoming their third child, Charles two years later.

Kenneth possessed a benevolent spirit and great sense of humor. His passions included hunting, fishing, and cooking, all of which he shared with his family and friends. He taught his children to be self-sufficient, while instilling in them a strong work ethic, sense of decency, and respect toward others. Blessed with the birth of their first grandchild, Cydnee in 1999, Kenneth and Florence took on the roles of grandparents, affectionately called Papa and Granny by Cydnee, names worn proudly.

After 29 years of service, he retired from Southwestern Bell in 2002 as a Communication Technician. During that time Kenneth enjoyed the company of family and friends. He became a member of the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church Congregation in 2006. Kenneth was blessed by the birth of four additional grandchildren and one great grandchild, who he affectionately referred to as "Sugar Dumpling."

Kenneth left this world on Januaary 21, 2013 with his family and dear friends at his side. The world is a lesser place without him.

Kenneth was preceded in death by his father, Howard Black and his step father George D. White, leaving behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 44 years, Florence; his mother Pearlie White; three children, Ericka Holmes (Wendell), Kenneth Black, Jr. (Rebecca) and Charles Black; five grandchildren, Cydnee, Zoe, Noah, Aubrey and Kenneth III; one great grandchild Jordyn; his step mother, Rev. Bobbie Black; a sister, Zelma; a brother Lance; a step brother Charles House; brother-in-law, Volma Overton, Jr. (Shirley); sisters-in-law, Shaarlet Holum (David), DeDra Overton; nieces, Kim, Adrian and Sarah Overton; nephew, Volma Overton, III; great niece Ailah Overton; a host of family and very dear friends.
