Although Doug's mother had six girls, first she had one son. A handsome son, a good son. One who excelled in academics, played the clarinet, joined the USAF at 18 years old. He traveled the world, married once and was a hero to his sisters. He never had children. He played with anything electric, crafted leather, was a jack and collector of many things. Doug served in the Air Force for 20 years; part of that service included Vietnam. His sisters looked forward to when he came home on leave in uniform, screaming and jumping on him and asking questions all at once. After a few short days, he'd be gone again. We wondered why he didn't stay around long enough for us to get to know him better. Never realizing he was doing what adults do. They grow up, get a job and leave home to make it on their own. And on his own he's been these many years. In the last month, however, he has given his six sisters an opportunity to be with him. Travelling by car and plane, and speaking by phone, we've each been able to say good-bye in our own way. Now he can be laid to rest in a clean uniform, swaddled in the flag-draped coffin bedding, with a 21-gun. He can be at peace, and as he returns our salutes, he'll say, "At ease." He'll whisper in the wind this time honored poem:
