Born July 6, 1963 to Elbert Weems and Dorothy Weems Alexander in Hammond, Indiana, Derrick was an extremely intelligent child; some say he was an "old soul". He professed Christ and was baptized at an early age at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Hammond, Indiana under the Pastorate of the late Rev. A. R. Burns. Derrick excelled in school graduating from Hammond High School with Honors (1981) and later attended Indiana University at Bloomington (1982) studying Computer Science. He later attended St. Edwards University, Austin, Texas where he consistently was on the Dean's List. Derrick was employed with AT&T for many years as a Deaf TDYY Translator.

Derrick had a heart for outreach and ministering to the poor, the castaway and the sick. He loved volunteering and volunteered for a number of Social Services here in Austin: Aids Services Austin, Cares Communities of Austin, Doug's House, Hospice Care Austin and several other community outreaches. He truly believed in being a service to whomever he could.

Derrick loved the Lord and was known in the evangelical community throughout Austin as an Anointed Psalmist who loved to worship the Lord. He worshipped, visited and ministered at many churches namely Victory Christian Center, Higher Calling Assembly of God, but Derrick called Ebenezer Baptist Church of Austin his church home. He loved his church family and loved serving and singing. Derrick was shy when it came to singing but not until he totally yielded to the Lord did he truly find his "voice." It was at Ebenezer Baptist Church where he yielded his beautiful voice to praise the Lord singing with the Mass Choir, Men's Choir and any other choir he could sing with. Derrick, although battling his sickness, was a worshipper. He loved to worship the Lord and Praise God anyhow!

Derrick was affectionately called "PeeWee" by his family and his unique life and love will be cherished by his mother, Dorothy Weems Alexander, Hammond, Indiana; his father, Elbert (Dorothy) Weems, Hammond, Indiana; two brothers, Darryl Van Weems (deceased) and Donald Pierre Weems, Sr., Hammond, Indiana; two sisters, Lisa Weems, Evanston, Illinois and Yolanda Weems-Bracey, Merrillville, Indiana; Godchild/Niece-Azaria Rich, Hammond, Indiana; ten nephews, two nieces, five great nieces and a host of cousins who all adoringly called him "PeeWee." He often talked of his special friend, Ms. Madeline McCauley, Austin, Texas who was indeed a friend and a sister to him during his transition. He will be greatly missed by many, but we the family rest in that heaven has gained yet another beautiful angel to sing in Heaven's choir. Sing on PeeWee...Sing on...To God Be ALL The Glory!!
