James Washington, Jr. was the eldest of two sons born to the late James & Louetta Washington on February 16, 1943, in Austin, Texas. He graduated from Old L.C. Anderson High School in 1961.

He confessed his faith in God at an early age, was baptized and became a member of the Church of God in Christ.

He attended Prairie View University in 1965 with high honors. He completed his studies at St. Edward's University and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Studies in 1979. While at Prairie View University, James served as the choir director. One of his greatest highlights was the choir's recording of their first A Cappella Album. He was so proud and fond of that moment.

Servitude and leadership was a constant theme throughout his life. He served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years, where he traveled around the world twice, receiving high commendations and honors throughout his military career. He was awarded the rank of Chief Petty Officer on August 5, 1982. Chief Petty Officer James Washington, Jr. received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy on March 3, 1990. He was also employed with the Travis County Sheriff's Department for 30 faithful and devoted years. He was issued a Certificate of Retirement on July 16, 2003, with high honors.

James had a great sense of humor and loved working with people and helping his fellow man. He was a passionate Harley Davidson motorcycle rider along with his brother John. He found much joy and comfort working in the yard and gardening. He challenged himself by purchasing sick plants and bringing them back to life. His greatest joy was training, teaching and raising his one and only son Kevin, who he affectionately called, "Vino." Because of his dad's influence, Kevin went on to become a Certified Master Gardner. James was also a dynamic, culinary Chef.

He was preceded in death by his parents James & Louetta Washington, first wife Bertha Washington and second wife Alice Washington.

Remaining to cherish his memories is son, Kevin Washington; daughter-in-law, Mia Washington; brother, John Washington; sister-in-law, Lois Washington; special companion, Jacquie Easley and a host of relatives and friends.
