Donald was united in marriage to the late Ruby Jewel Thomas. This union was blessed with two sons Donald Jr. and Alex, both of Austin.

After a six year tour of duty in the Navy, he served as a Travis County Sheriff's Deputy. Later in his career, he ran for the office and became the first elected black law enforcement officer in the county. Don's career as Constable began in 1972 until his health forced him to retire in 1997. He served the city of Austin, surrounding counties, and the community, "without fear or favor".
