Horace Curtis "Boo" Smith was born October 5, 1943 in Austin, Texas to James Caldwell and Vivian Prosser Smith. He was the second of eight children.

He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. Mary Baptist Church in St. Mary Colony, Texas by the late Rev. L. M. Roberts. He later joined Corinth MBC when the family moved their membership to Austin, Texas. He later joined several churches in California under watch care.

He graduated from L.C. Anderson High School. He attended St. Phillips Jr. College in San Antonio, Texas and Prairie View A & M College before making a career in the Air Force. He served 20 years in the military and retired in 1987. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant. He later retired from Northup Grumman where he worked as a security guard and on construction of the B-2 stealth bomber.

While stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas he met and married Lois Diane Threet on August 8, 1970 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

He loved the game of fast-pitch softball in which he excelled as a pitcher. He travelled extensively as a member of the Air Force softball team. He later successfully coached championship women's Air Force softball and basketball teams.

Horace was the link between family members in Northern and Southern California and Texas. He knew all the family news before most family members in each town. He was always present by telephone during all Texas events he could not attend. He would call and ask 'you haven't left yet' to go to an appointment or family function. He had a keen sense of humor and made preparing (barbeque) for family gatherings go like clock-work. There are many fond memories.

Horace was called to eternal rest on Thursday evening, 12/29/2011. He was preceded in death by his father James Smith.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his sons Ronald David Smith of Little Rock, Arkansas and Douglas Edward Threet of Atlanta, Georgia; mother, Vivian Smith of Austin, Texas; five brothers, James (Rosie) Smith of Memphis, Tennessee, Edwin (Claudette) and Andrew (Valdalyn) Smith of Houston, Texas, Kinnard (Brenda) Smith of Austin, Texas, and Leonard (Mae) Smith of Taylor, Texas; two sisters, Carroll (Thomas) Mayse of Temple, Texas and Deborah Davis of Austin, Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
