Nadine Elaine Mitchell

Nadine Elaine Burns Mitchell and her fraternal twin sister, Almetra Ann, were born on May 16, 1938 to Ira J. and Mary E. Burns of Manor, Texas.

Nadine accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at an early age and was baptized by Rev. J. H. Penn, the pastor of Gildon Creek Third Baptist Church. She attended and graduated from the Manor Public School System.

On May 5, 1960 she married Oliver Robert Mitchell and moved to his hometown of Austin, Texas. This union produced one child, Melba Elaine Mitchell.

Nadine worked for the Wilkerson Family for many years and then worked in the childcare field. She retired from the Texas School for the Deaf as head cook after 20 years of service.

Although she lived and worked in Austin, she continued to serve faithfully at Gildon Creek Third Baptist Church until her health failed. Nadine served as an usher, fellowshipped with the women’s mission circle, and wrote many tributes and meditations for special church services.

She was trustworthy and reliable. If she said it, count on her to do it. She was always there to help or lend a hand. She loved her family, friends, and church dearly. That love was second only to the love she shared with God.

After an exhaustive battle with breast cancer, God called her to rest on August 5, at 8:00 a.m. at the Christopher House. During her illness the love she had for others was returned to her one hundred fold. She was truly blessed.

Her mother, father, two brothers and twin sister preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her memory: husband Oliver Mitchell and daughter Melba Mitchell; three brothers, Curtis Burns of Los Angeles, California, Chester Burns of Dallas, Texas and Elbert Burns and wife Willie Mae of Manor, Texas; three sisters, Gracie Harris of Manor, Texas, Amanda Burns and Evelyn Shackerford of Austin, Texas; three aunts, Elnora Jackson of Austin, Texas, Adlene Jackson of Elgin, Texas, Laurena Curey of Houston, Texas; three uncles, Willie Foster and William Foster, both of Los Angeles, California, Murray Foster of Oxnard, California; mother-in-law, Annie Lee Mitchell of Austin, Texas; sister-in-law, Gloria Shead and husband Charles of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers-in-law, Benny Mitchell and wife Marcella of Houston, Texas, Walter Mitchell and wife Ruby Lee of Austin, Texas; a very special nephew, Bobby Burns and wife Jerrie of Austin, Texas; and more wonderful nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
